Autumn in the Garden: The Perfect Time to Plant and Refresh Your Landscapes

Autumn is one of the most rewarding seasons in the South East Queensland garden, offering milder temperatures, reliable rainfall, and ideal planting conditions. It’s the perfect time to establish trees, shrubs, and perennials before the cooler months, allowing strong root development ahead of spring growth. Native favourites such as Callistemon (Bottlebrush), Grevillea, and Westringia fruticosa (Coastal Rosemary) thrive when planted now, while ornamental choices like Camellia sasanqua and Lavandula (Lavender) add seasonal colour and structure. With the soil still warm, plants settle in quickly and require less water than during summer.

For existing landscapes, autumn is a time to refresh and prepare. Light pruning, mulching, and soil improvement will set your garden up for success through winter. Apply a quality organic mulch to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, and consider feeding with a slow-release fertiliser to support steady growth. It’s also an excellent opportunity to fill gaps with hardy groundcovers such as Myoporum parvifolium or Dichondra repens (Kidney Weed). With a little attention now, your garden will remain healthy, resilient, and ready to flourish in the seasons ahead.
